Daisy knitting needles

Crystal Palace is now also offering these fun, bright and inexpensive knitting needles. They're mostly large sizes, and the cheerful colors are coordinated to the size so you'll never get confused. They're tough but hollow so they're very light. The feel is smooth and they're quiet, warm and flexible. The traditional straight, single-point needles have a large concave end stop to keep your knitting on.

Daisy needles

These needles are made of thermoplastic resin (ABS), a plastic that's designed for strength and durability, resistant to weather and UV, and recyclable. So you can forget them in the backyard or on the back seat of the car without ill effects, they should be resistant to most abuse you can dish out. Terhi, a Finnish company, has won environmental awards for using ABS in their boat hulls, which should also give you an idea of how strong it is. Don't confuse these with other plastic needles that have recently acquired colors, but that are made with inferior materials and whose badly-designed point doesn't handle novelty yarns as well as these ones.

I've always been kind of opposed to knitting scarves lengthwise, finding it difficult to come out with anything good in less than too-many tries. But Crystal Palace has many free patterns for scarves knitted that way, already worked out for size. Of course the short straight needles are perfect for regular scarves, much easier to handle than long ones. And recently, I discovered while knitting their fun 7-foot holiday garlands that the 14" Daisy needles are perfect for the purpose - the end stops really keep the knitting on the needle, they're just long enough to accomodate extravagant lengths, and there are fewer problems with tension than when using circulars. So I'm now converted...
